Reading Mastery

The cornerstone of Northmount's enriched curriculum, Reading Mastery addresses all three of the major strands of the Ontario Curriculum and is complimented by Spelling Mastery, Phonics, Reading and Reasoning, Language Power and handwriting. This year we have also added the Accelerated Learning Reading Program.

Reading Mastery begins in Kindergarten and moves with the student up to Grade Five. The Grade Five students actually do perform at the Grade Six Level in that program. Students learn to master literature and the Language Arts. The lessons focus on skill sets such as spelling, vocabulary, usage, comprehension, and written expression. Oral presentations are commonly found in our Language Arts classes because of the writing component of Reading Mastery and the additional 6+ 1 Writing Traits Program. Our young men have the ability to express themselves well on paper and in front of an audience. They are readers who not only comprehend, but are able to see beyond the surface details of a narrative.

A typical lesson will begin with the teacher reviewing the vocabulary and directing the class on pronunciation and meaning. Various students will begin reading and the teacher will assess their progress based on a system of points per error in a given passage. The story will be discussed and then read again. The Reading Mastery Program comes with a Skill Book and a Workbook that engage the student in reading comprehension, vocabulary, logical connections, logic, and written expression. Students are encouraged to read the story again at home orally to a parent. The results of this program are tremendous.
